Job description

Our Data Engineers enable public sector organisations to embrace a data-driven approach by providing data platforms and services that are high-quality, cost-efficient, and tailored to the clients’ needs. They develop, operate, and maintain these services. They make sure they provide maximum value to data consumers, including analysts, scientists, and business stakeholders.

As a Data Engineer, you'll play a hands-on role as a contributor to client projects, focusing on both delivering engineering work as well as upskilling members of the client team.

As a member of the Data and AI Practice within Made Tech, you will also participate in the continued development of the team. You’ll need to have a drive to deliver outcomes for users and have a desire to share your knowledge and participate in skill transfer sessions.

Skills, knowledge and expertise

We look for the following skills and experience. But if you don’t have some of the skills and experience listed below, don’t let that stop you from applying!

Engineering and Data Engineering
  • Hands-on Python experience
  • Knowledge of cloud infrastructure like AWS, GCP or Azure
  • Have used version control systems, specifically Git or similar tools
  • Understanding of TDD and diverse testing methodologies, such as data quality, integration, and unit testing
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines to maintain code quality and facilitate deployments
  • Knowledge of Data Engineering fundamentals, including Batch processing and ETL/ELT
  • Basic understanding of various data architectures, such as Lakes and Warehouses
  • Knowledge of data cleansing and transformation within unified, standardised schemas
  • Basic SQL 
DevOps and DataOps
  • Awareness of IaC tools, particularly Terraform 
  • Knowledge of basic logging and monitoring practice
  • Knowledge of basic access controls, policies and approaches particularly on Cloud services 
Consultancy Skills
  • Enthusiasm for learning and self-development and sharing that within a team and organisation 
  • Good communication skills
  • Showcasing and presentation skills
  • Desire to work in a cross functional team environment 
  • A desire to understand client needs and requirements 
Desirable experience
Experience in the following things isn’t essential, but it’s highly desirable!
  • Working at a technology consultancy
  • Working with data scientists to productionise advanced data deliverables, such as machine learning models
  • Working within the public sector
  • Experience of working in Agile practices such as Scrum, XP, and/or Kanban
