A Lead Content Designer is an expert practitioner who sets standards, mentors colleagues and leads content design and the approach to user-centered design (UCD) across multiple teams or on highly complex services. They take significant personal responsibility and work autonomously. Their work is often self-initiated and involves influencing colleagues and stakeholders on the value of content design. They work on multidisciplinary delivery teams to:
- set strategic direction for the content of a service
- make sure content aligns to the client’s objectives while meeting the needs of users
- assure the quality of content delivery across teams
They have an essential role in creating a healthy UCD community and culture at Made Tech. They report to the Head of Discipline for Content Design, or a UCP Principal.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the overall approach to UCD with your service team
- assure the quality of design delivery within your service team and set and share Made Tech’s design standards to ensure design best practice
- be accountable for the production of high-quality, user-focused content
- play a leading role in ensuring delivery teams have a shared understanding of problems to solve and ideas to test
- have excellent knowledge of how to make services accessible to everyone
- have thorough knowledge of the government Service Standard and how to meet it through content design and wider design best practice
- show teams by doing - demonstrating good habits for sharing and improving content
- demonstrate extensive experience in creating, iterating, managing and overseeing content across multiple channels
- encourage teams to review and evaluate the effectiveness of processes and systems, and support them to iterate for improvements
- build relationships with clients, earning their trust and understanding their needs
- identify opportunities for new work, and support the bid team by contributing UCD expertise to bids
- manage less experienced content designers
- identify gaps in content design skills and capability, and help teams to grow and develop
- lead and/or support the hiring and onboarding of designers
- help lead a safe, supportive, healthy community of practice
- represent content design publicly and internally
